It was completed in 2017, and its sequel, “FAIRY TAIL 100 YEARS QUEST” (original story by Mashima Hiro, art by Ueda Atsuo) is currently being serialized on “Magapoke”.
Starting Sunday, July 7, 2024, the TV anime “FAIRY TAIL 100 Years Quest,” based on the original “FAIRY TAIL 100 Years Quest,” will begin broadcasting on TV Tokyo’s six affiliated stations and elsewhere.
To commemorate this, we interviewed Tetsuya Kakihara, who plays the main character, Natsu Dragneel!
We asked him about his thoughts on playing Natsu in an anime for the first time in five years since the final season of “FAIRY TAIL” in 2019, and what to look forward to in this new adventure.
–The final season of “FAIRY TAIL” aired in 2019, and this will be the first new work in five years. First of all, please tell us how you felt when you heard that this work would be produced.
Tetsuya Kakihara, voice of Natsu Dragneel (hereafter, Kakihara): To be honest, my first reaction was, “Eh, isn’t ‘FAIRY TAIL’ over?” (laughs). After fighting various strong opponents, including Acnologia, and thinking that I’d done everything I could, I heard about the production of this “100 Year Quest”.
But to tell you the truth, I had only heard rumors at the launch party in 2019 after the previous work ended. I heard someone say, “Now that the manga is continuing as ‘100 Year Quest,’ it might be made into an anime too.” From that time on, I thought, “Maybe I’ll have a chance to play Natsu again.”
–So, this was a new series that you were really looking forward to, Kakihara-san?
Kakihara: That’s where it gets a little complicated. I didn’t know about “100 Year Quest” until I heard about it at the wrap party. So when the recording ended, I said goodbye to Natsu and the others with a positive feeling. They were going on a new adventure, and I was taking the next step as an actor and as Tetsuya Kakihara.
Also, this “FAIRY TAIL” is a very important work to me. I spent my 20s and 30s with Natsu and we traveled together for a long time, so when the previous series ended, it felt special to me. That’s why, even when I heard that a new series was starting, I had this thought in my heart, “How should I feel when I reunite with Natsu?” I don’t mean this in a negative way, so please don’t misunderstand, but still, there were emotions that I couldn’t just say “I’m happy!” For example, I had a similar feeling or emotion before recording, like reuniting with family or siblings that I haven’t seen for many years.
–Please tell us about the unique appeal of the 100-Year Quest that you feel.
Kakihara: Guilds that were defeated in the past also appeared, so I’m not sure if that’s the right word, but it was like a class reunion, and I felt nostalgic and excited. There were also episodes where my memories were getting hazy. Like, “Why did Gajeel and Levy date?” (laughs).
However, I felt the love of the original author, Hiro Mashima, and the artist of “FAIRY TAIL 100 YEARS QUEST,” Atsuo Ueda, in bringing back characters from the past in this way, and I think that fans who have been watching all this time will be able to get a new sense of the long history of this series.
また、懐かしいキャラクターたちの登場は、それだけナツたちがさまざまな冒険を重ねてきたという証拠でもありますし、ともに歩んできた仲間たちとの生きた証とも言えると思うんです。しかもそれって、この新シリーズのテーマに繋がる部分でもあって。というのも、第1話で語られているとおり、《100年クエスト》とは、100年間誰も達成できなかったクエストを指す。かつてギルダーツが一人で挑み、失敗して絶望感を味わいましたが、それに対してナツは第1話で、「かっこつけやがって。1人で行くから失敗したんだ。オレは違うぞ。仲間と行く。だから絶望なんてしねえよ」と言い放つ。つまり、信頼できる仲間がいるからこそ挑めるクエストですし、彼らの過去の関係性を踏まえた上での物語になっている。この展開の仕方もすごく素敵だなと感じましたね。
ーー柿原さんの演じるナツの魅⼒を教えてください。また今回の話で、ナツのどういった部分に注⽬してほしいですか？ また前作初期と比較してキャラクターの成⻑を感じた点はありますか？
柿原：ナツは常に変わらずカリスマですよね。だって、勝手に人が集まってきちゃうわけですから（笑）。気がついたら、いつも彼のまわりは賑やかになってますしね。それに、彼が間違えそうになったり、暴走しそうになった時には、「それは違う」と言って止めてくれる仲間がいる。そこも彼がカリスマたるところだと思います。ナツは決して孤高の存在ではないですし、まわりには彼が信頼し、また彼を信頼してくれている仲間がいる。そして、ナツがひと言、「よし、じゃあ冒険に行くぞ！」といえば、みんな同じ方向を向いて旅をする。本当にいい仲間に恵まれているなと思います。
ーーちなみに、ナツと柿原さん自身が重なるところ、共感するところはありますか？
柿原：彼の言動はあまりにもダイナミックすぎるので（笑）、重なるところはあまりないんですが、でも共演者のみんなからは、ずっと「カッキーはナツそのまんまだね」って言われてました。アニメがスタートした頃の僕はまだ20代で、“このセリフはどういうふうに表現すればいいんだろう”って悩むことが多かったんです。けど、みんなから「普段のままでいいんだよ。カッキーが普通にしゃべれば、それがナツになるんだから」って言ってもらえたのはよく覚えています。
それと、嬉しかったのは、真島ヒロ先生からも同じような言葉を言っていただけたことで。これもアニメが始まったばかりの頃ですが、先生が「どうしてもナツがカッキーにダブって見えて、（マンガの連載で）ナツを描いていると、目がつり上がっていって、カッキーの目になっちゃうんだよね」っておっしゃっていたんですよね。こんなにも素敵なキャラクターに僕をダブらせて見てくださっていたというのは、本当に嬉しかったです。
