Takumi’s love finally comes to fruition and he marries Mira. Using the key he was looking for, Asutoro-sou transforms into a giant robot! After that, they intercept the fleet of the planet Goshu that has launched an all-out attack on Earth. After easily defeating the Emperor of Planet Goshu, they return to their peaceful daily lives at Asutoro-sou. You can empathize
with each character, and it was a work that left you feeling satisfied and fulfilled beyond what you’d expect from a single season.
The final installment of this series will feature a conversation between Director General Takamatsu Shinji and Director Kasuganomori Haruki!
–In the opening scene of episode 1, it was not Milla but her mother Adara who was running away (laughs).
Shinji Takamatsu (hereafter, Takamatsu): That’s right. It was misleading. I thought it was Mira, but it wasn’t Mira.
Haruki Kasugamori (hereafter, Kasugamori): You were setting up all kinds of misleading plot devices (laughs). Aoi-chan was like that too.
–I think the romantic comedy part was mostly resolved in episode 11, but what aspects did you focus on as you built it up?
Kasugamori: I wanted to avoid the typical romantic comedy situation where an angel descends upon a dull guy.
Takumi is a disappointing character in some ways, but he also has good points and is a reliable chef. This applies not only to Takumi but also to Mira, but I wanted to portray them as people with strong cores.
Whether or not we were able to achieve that is up to the viewers to decide, but personally I believe that the film was able to achieve that.
–Did you think about what would make people’s emotions change?
Kasugamori: That’s right. Takumi has been there from the beginning, so I think it’s more Mira’s feelings.
Takamatsu: They won’t get together unless Milla falls in love with them. Even during the scenario meeting, I thought, “We’ve come halfway through, but maybe they won’t get together?” (laughs).
Kasugamori: It wasn’t very clear (laughs).
–But when you saw you holding hands with Aoi-chan, some unknown emotion welled up inside you, right?
Kasugamori: Come to think of it, regarding Aoi’s love life, Fukuyama Jun, who plays Shoin, said, “Takumi might be a psychopath” (laughs).
Takamatsu: Around the time he rejected Aoi (Episode 9).
春日森：葵ちゃんのことを覚えていなかったというのも……。
高松：怖い！この男！って（笑）。
――おにぎり食べてるところでやっと思い出しましたからね。そのくらいミラに一直線だったんですけど、鈍感というのをいいことに、第7話の「こん虫まつり」デートあたりは、葵ちゃんへの接し方が酷くて、葵ちゃんを応援したくなりました（笑）。ただ、ミラが拓己を好きになるというところは、段階を踏んで描いていたのかなと思います。
春日森：演出さんや 作画さんと打ち合わせをするときも「まだこの段階では拓己を好きになっていないです」とか「好きになっている気持ちに気づいていないです」と、ちゃんと伝えながらお願いはしていました。
高松：どうなるかと思ったけど、くっついて良かったです。そういう絵的なところは、春日森監督に任せていたんです。役割分担として、私は全体的なところを見ていて、細かい作画のことやスタジオ周りのことは春日森監督にお任せしていたので。
――住人たちの人間関係も、面白さに繋がっていましたが、お気に入りの関係などはありますか？
春日森：第6話のアダラと下高井戸太助さんの話は結構好きでした。あの時代の恋愛という感じがしましたし。そこを演出された富沢信雄さんも、ベテランの演出家でして。
高松：あそこだけ急に違うアニメになっていたよね（笑）。戦時中のリアルな感じが出ていたので、何が始まったんだ？って思ったでしょうね。
春日森：そうなんですよ（笑）。時代を越えて、あの当時の恋愛を描けたのかなと思っています。あとは若林富裕さんも詳しくは描いていないんですけど、何かがあって蓮と一緒になったというのがわかったり、自分で絵コンテを描いていても、しんみりするシーンはたくさんありました。
――富裕役の杉田智和さんの演技が面白いなと思いつつも、蓮がスカートを履いたところでは、本人を否定するのではなく、世間の目から守ることを考えるとか、父親っぽいなと思いながら見ていました（第5話）。
春日森：杉田さんは、すごく真面目に演技をされる方なんです。
高松：第1話のときに、富裕についてすごく聞かれたんです。このキャラクターはどういう感じで、どういうキャラクターなの？って。
――しっかりバックボーンも理解して演じていたから感動できたんですね。
