Gegege no Kitaro, which depicts the story of Kitaro, the last boy of the ghost tribe, and the tales he weaves with a wide variety of monsters, is a work that spread the image of monsters throughout Japan and sparked a huge boom. The sixth season of the TV anime, set in the present day, nearly 20 years into the 21st century, aired from April 2018 to March 2020. Kitaro Birth: The Mystery of Gegege, a film released in November 2023 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of the original author, Shigeru Mizuki, depicts the story of Kitaro’s fathers, told for the first time.
This work has a strong affinity with ukiyo-e, and its mysterious, mystical, and slightly eerie worldview matches perfectly with the ukiyo-e style of expression. Hanzo’s “GeGeGe Ukiyo-e” series is an ukiyo-e that was created with great care to preserve the essence of “Japaneseness” that is common to each work.
The lineup consists of the first installment, “Friends of the Dawn,” which depicts the friendship between Kitaro’s father and Mizuki from the movie “The Birth of Kitaro: The Mystery of GeGeGe,” the second installment based on the sixth season of “GeGeGe no Kitaro,” “One Hundred Tales of Monsters: Sarayashiki, the Late Clear Breeze,” the third installment, “One Hundred Tales of Monsters: Kohada Koheiji, Acquaintance and Friend,” the fourth installment, “Catgirl and the Ghostly Henge,” the fifth installment, “One Hundred Tales of Monsters: Remembering Dodo-jii’s Obsession, Lacquered Body and Charcoal Drinking,” and the sixth installment, “The Flower of the Ayashiki,” for six other works.
