Animate Times is running a series of email interviews with the voice actors and staff of this work. The eighth in the series is with director Kazuya Miura!

Please note that this interview contains spoilers for the final episode of the anime series. If you have not yet watched it, please be careful.

–What was your first impression of this work after checking out the original work and the comic book adaptation?

Director Kazuya Miura (hereinafter Miura): (First half) Oh, it’s high fantasy… (Second half) No, it’s science fiction?!

-What kind of communication did you have with the original author, Furumiya Kuji, regarding the anime adaptation?

Miura: As I asked them about the images they had in mind when they were writing, there were many moments when I thought, “I see,” but I can’t go into details yet.

–The character designs seem to be faithful to the original illustrations and the comic book version. What concept did you ask Noumi Chika, who was in charge of the designs, to come up with?

Miura: Nothing in particular. It’s a bit early to start, so I don’t remember, but I think I asked them to draw it however they wanted without compromising the image.

–Please tell us your impressions of the voice actors who play the characters and any stories that happened on the recording set.

Miura: Everyone was doing well and there were no problems.

I was left with the impression that Nakajima-san was cool and clever. Perhaps he was a quiet man.

I remember Tanezaki-san coming over to ask “How about this?” almost every time, and also his glasses, which left an impression on me for some reason.

Because the story focuses on the conversations between Oscar and Tinasha, I was not able to delve deeper into the other characters, and for that I apologize for the lack of dialogue. At the scenario stage, there were many times when I thought, “I want them to say this and that…”

I would have also liked to see Tinasha feed Arus to the Kraken.

— The protagonist of this work, Oscar, and the heroine, Tinasha. Please tell us the reason and background for asking Nakajima-san and Tanezaki-san to play these two characters.

Miura: First of all, there was the audition. Now everyone is very talented so there were many candidates, but looking back, I think the final deciding factor was the push from (original author) Furumiya-san and the (production) producer.

–I think the witty exchanges between Oscar and Tinasha are one of the highlights of this work. What did you pay attention to when animating the intimate scenes between the two? Also, what kind of direction did you give to the actors Yoshiki Nakajima and Atsumi Tanezaki?
