“SLAM DUNK” is a boys’ manga by Takehiko Inoue that was serialized in “Weekly Shonen Jump” from issue 42 in 1990 to issue 27 in 1996. The story depicts the personal growth of players in high school basketball, and the total number of copies of the series published in Japan is over 120 million. “THE FIRST SLAM DUNK” is a film written and directed by the original author Inoue himself, which was released on December 3, 2022, and has exceeded 15.5 billion yen in box office revenue. It recorded the No. 1 box office revenue of all films in Japan in 2023, both foreign and domestic.
The film’s exclusive distribution on Netflix began on June 10th to commemorate its return to screening in over 300 cinemas nationwide from August 13th. It was featured prominently in the “Today’s Top 10 Movies (Japan)” every day from its release until June 21st, and the “First Watch Party” held on the first day of distribution was a huge success, with a total of 1.35 million people participating on X (formerly Twitter).
Following its “first release” on Netflix ahead of its return screening this summer, the film has been creating excitement on social media with comments such as “I finally watched it for the first time. It’s amazing. I cried my eyes out,” and “No matter how many times I watch it, it moves me and excites me…I’ll definitely go see the re-screening.” In response to this enthusiasm, a watch party has been scheduled for June 23rd, and it will be even more powerful for the second time.
On the day, the voice actors of Shohoku and Sanno will watch the film and talk about their thoughts on the film, behind-the-scenes stories, and answer questions from viewers during the radio broadcast. The voice actors will also answer questions sent in through X during the watch party. In addition, an after-talk will be held from 10pm after the viewing.
As with the first episode, the elapsed time and the score of the match will be updated in real time in conjunction with the match situation in the film, and simultaneous viewing will allow viewers to feel as if they are actually at the match venue.
