Spring anime “Jellyfish Can’t Swim at Night” Series No. 7: Original illustration designer for the movie, Zuko Hamune | What are the details of the illustrations for the movie, and what did the director say to you?Original TV anime “Jellyfish Can’t Swim at Night”. Director: Ryohei Takeshita x Screenplay: Yuuki Yaku x Animation Production: A youth group drama presented by Douga Studio.

Episode 7 is an episode where Mahiru and Mei, and Kanon and Kiwi, each think about their future. This time too, there were many things that made me think and moved me!

In the seventh installment of the series, we asked Zuko Hamune, who is in charge of the original illustrations for the play by illustrator Yoru Kizuki, to comment on how she became involved with the work and the behind-the-scenes stories behind the creation of the illustrations. .

–Please tell us about when you received the offer. What did you hear from the director?

Hamunezuko: I was initially surprised when I was asked via pixiv, “Would you like to try working on anime?” Anime was one of my dream jobs, so while I was very happy, I also felt a lot of pressure.

Director Ryohei Takeshita carefully explained various aspects such as the worldview and character characteristics. What left an impression on me was when he said, I want to create a work together.'' Normally, I often get orders from people saying, I want you to draw something like this,” but when I worked on “Yorukura,” the director listened carefully to my ideas, and I felt like we were able to refine them together. there is. I was very happy that they were considering me as a member of the production.

–I think this is a work that many people who create things will relate to, but if there are any scenes or characters that Hamunezuko resonates with, please let us know.

Hamunezuko: I especially sympathize with Mahiru, who is also an illustrator. In my activities at JELEE, the scenes where I compare illustrations with other people’s illustrations and feel depressed because I worry about other people’s evaluations are very similar to my own experiences and I felt a strong sense of empathy. I think many creators in particular can empathize with this by saying, “I get it!”

–The visuals are beautiful, but are there any scenes that stood out to you?

Hamunezuko: I can’t choose, but I think it’s the scene in episode 5 when Kanon comes to Mahiru’s room and Kanon accepts Mahiru who becomes timid…

I really like the backlight shining into Mahiru’s simple room, and the atmosphere that makes you feel the warmth of the two of them.

Also, the members of JELEE are just so cute! The moment I saw the scene where Mahiru wakes up at the beginning of the first episode, I was surprised and thought, “Mahiru is so cute!” (lol)

–What did you keep in mind when you were in charge of Yoru’s drawings, with one filter in between? Please let me know if there are any differences between this and when you draw your own work.
