This time, an official interview with Hana Hope, the artist who sings the opening theme “Tabi no Yukue”, has been released. He talks about his impressions of the work and songs called “Spice and Wolf,” so please take a look.
–What impression did you have when you encountered the rich worldview of “Spice and Wolf”?
I was very excited to see the animation of Spice and Wolf,'' which was previously broadcast, and some scenes of Spice and Wolf: MERCHANT MEETS THE WISE WOLF.” I was able to relate it to something that I love, and since I myself love nature, I felt that the world of Spice and Wolf was close to my ideals and values.
–In addition to this work, Hana has been singing more and more songs for anime and games lately. How do you analyze the reasons for your high affinity with such works?
I don’t realize what kind of charm my own voice has. However, I thought that “flowers”, which she sang as her major debut song, was a song that matched my voice. It’s also a fun song to sing. I love singing ballads, so I feel like that aspect was also appreciated.
――Even though you have such a wonderful voice, are you not aware of it?
Thank you smile). I feel that my emotions are reflected in my voice, but I’m not sure if it’s being properly conveyed to the listener… You may find yourself thinking about that point. However, I feel that the way the story and storytelling is crafted has improved from before.
Also, by being in charge of the anime’s theme song, I became more interested in anime and was able to learn more about how to express myself in Japanese. As a result, I feel that my identity as an artist who sings in both Japanese and English and is active in Japan has become more fulfilling.
–What impression did you have when you first heard “Tabi no Yukue”?
I had the impression that it was a very dynamic song. When I saw the previous animation of Spice and Wolf, I thought, “This is a very beloved work.” In order not to disrupt that world, I tried my best to sing in my own style while being conscious of incorporating a fresh approach suitable for the new season.
–I was struck by the beauty of each Japanese word. How did you feel when you read the lyrics?
I also thought that the lyrics were beautifully worded. In particular, the part “I want to hold hands and keep walking” really touched my heart, and when I heard the finished song, I felt it was wonderful again.
–What did you focus on during the recording?
What I was most conscious of while singing was the free flow of my voice. I sang while imagining a majestic grassland. I cherished each note and sang the song to express the eternal journey of Holo and Lawrence. At the same time, I also wanted to express the complex feelings of Holo and Lawrence, such as their love and the anxiety they felt as the journey progressed.
–I felt that the chorus added to the depth of “Tabi no Yukue.”
This song itself was one of the most difficult songs I’ve ever sung. Especially in the chorus, I used falsetto and tried various ways to make it sound beautiful. I had the impression that the rich nature was expanding, so I consciously layered the chorus in order to express the couple’s hopes. I think I was able to put my emotions into my voice.
–What kind of message did you want to send to the viewers of “Spice and Wolf” through the song?
I think when you watch the opening, you feel a sense of anticipation and excitement. I would be happy if it became an opening that everyone can enjoy every week. I hope that when you listen to this song, you will feel a variety of emotions, escape from reality a little, and immerse yourself in the world of your own personal journey and the world of “Spice and Wolf.”
Also, episode after episode, very interesting episodes will unfold. While there are exciting moments, there are also times when I feel anxious. I would be happy if you could link the story in the anime with my song “Tabi no Yukue” and listen to it, increasing your excitement and opening the door to the story.
――Having been involved in the song production, have you realized the appeal of “Spice and Wolf” anew?
中世ヨーロッパを想像させる世界と歴史と人々の生活がとても興味深かったです。その時代の香りがとても魅力的だなと感じていました。それに加えて、“狼神”と名乗るホロの存在があって……と、ヨーロッパと日本の文化が混じり合っていて、とてもクリエイティブだなと思いました。
――Hanaさん自身も音楽を通して、いろいろな文化に触れてきているんだなと感じます。
Hana：そうですね。父がアメリカ人で母が日本人なので、どちらの国の音楽の文化を聴きながら育ってきたので、そういう意味では、私のやっている音楽もいろいろな面があると思います。「旅のゆくえ」も、音のまざり方がとても特徴的ですし、曲自体も、世界のポップスとJ-ポップの文化が混ざり合っているように思っています。
――「旅のゆくえ」の制作過程を経て、今後の音楽活動におけるインスピレーションもさらに豊かになっていきそうですね。
そうですね。文化の混ざりあいにとても影響をうけました。ホロというキャラクターの生き方に、私自身とても憧れているんです。そこで得た刺激を今後の楽曲制作におけるストーリーラインに入れていきたいです。
――ところで、タイトルが「旅のゆくえ」であるように、Hanaさんご自身も音楽を通じて独自の旅を続けていると感じられることはありますか。
はい。歌を作るとき、参加してくださるクリエイターの一人ひとりが自分のイマジネーション、クリエイティビティを持っていて。コラボレーションをするたびに、その方の頭の中に入って、その空間を旅するような感覚を味わっています。
もちろんその人の思考のすべてを理解できるわけではないのですが、分からないこともまたひとつのワクワクだと思っています。そうやって自分の中に取り入れていくのも、アーティストのひとつの役目だと考えています。
――その中で、今後目指したい場所や、行ってみたい場所はありますか？
本作を見て、中世ヨーロッパにとても興味を持ちました。実はヨーロッパにはまだ行ったことがないんです。行きたい国はたくさんあるのですが、特にポルトガルに興味があります。ポルトガルの建物のユニークさやクリエイティビティに惹かれますね。
――ヨーロッパを訪れる機会があったら、歌へのインスピレーションがたくさん湧きそうですね。
確かに、「旅のゆくえ」パート2ができるかもしれません（笑）。
――楽しみにしていますね。では『狼と香辛料 MERCHANT MEETS THE WISE WOLF』のファンに向けてメッセージをください。
この曲のレコーディングをしている時、心から楽しみながら歌いました。『狼と香辛料』にとても愛情を抱いています。それを歌声から皆さんに感じてもらえたらとても嬉しいです。皆さんといっしょにアニメを楽しみたいと思っています。さきほども話したこととも重なりますが、この曲を聴きながら、現実から少しだけエスケープして、アニメの世界に旅ができたら嬉しいです。この曲を通じて、少しでもリフレッシュしてもらえたら、私にとっては大きな喜びです。
――まさにそのような思いが、このタイトルには込められているのでしょうか？
そうですね。ホロとロレンスは、故郷に帰る目的で旅をしているんですけど、そこではさまざまなトラブルに見舞われます。ふたりの旅のゆくえはどうなっていくかは不確かではあるけれど、それでも前に進む力を持ち続けていれば、希望が見えてくる。そういう大切なメッセージを込めました。
――ホロとロレンスの旅が進んでいくうちに、「旅のゆくえ」の歌詞への理解が深まったり、聴き方が変わったりと、受け取り方が変化しそうな気がします。
