In the first season of the TV anime, which aired in 2023, Katagiri Kanata’s qualifying time attack for the “Lake Ashi GT” was shown, and the final episode reached a climax of excitement.

The sequel, Season 2, will finally start on October 6, 2024!

Takumi Fujiwara’s student Natsumi Katagiri, the genius who returned from France Mitsuteru Sawatari, and the young “emperor” of MFG, Michael Beckenbauer… Anticipation is building for how these three and other drivers will battle it out on Lake Ashi.

Animate Times conducted email interviews with the cast! Our third interview is with Sakura Ayane, who plays Nishizonji Koi. Now that we are entering the second season, we asked her about her impressions of Nishizonji Koi, what to look out for in the future, and the appeal of this series.

–After the first season, have your thoughts and feelings about the character you play, Saionji Koi, changed?

Sakura Ayane (hereinafter, Sakura), who plays Saionji Ren: When I first read the original work, I had the image of a mysterious, romantic modern girl, which was so different from myself that I was a little worried whether I would be able to play the role well… However, after the dubbing, I got the impression that she is a life-sized, slightly twisted, but strong-willed girl with a strong sense of self, which made her a bit more approachable.

–What did you keep in mind when recording the 2nd Season? If there were any differences from the 1st Season, please tell us.

Sakura: It hasn’t been that long since the first season, so I approached it with the same emotions and awareness.

I was personally very excited to play the role as the character progresses in love.

–After performing the role, what do you feel is the appeal of Nishizonji Ren, and what are some points to look out for in the future?

Sakura: I feel that the love stories that are woven in between the thrilling racing scenes really add to the story.

We hope that the 2nd Season will also be able to provide you with some time to rest, and to experience a different kind of excitement than you get from racing.

–You said in your comments before the first season aired that you hope viewers will also pay attention to the romance scenes. What are your thoughts on the romance scenes in the first season? Also, what are you curious about in the romance scenes in the second season?

Sakura: In the first season, the main theme was about a strong girl who can say no to things she doesn’t like, but is then shaken and torn after a fateful encounter, but in the second season, I hope you’ll pay attention to the changes in her psychology as she is caught between love and romance.

──Sakura-san, you said you are a car novice, but what do you think is the appeal of cars after playing the role of a love interest? Please tell us if you have found any new appeal.

Sakura: Since I got involved with MF Ghost, I’ve come to appreciate the coolness of moving cars.

Also, since I got my driver’s license and started looking closely at the cars driving around town, I’ve started to notice differences in vehicles that I couldn’t tell the difference between at all before.

I spend my days thinking about what kind of car I would like to drive.

–What scenes would you personally like to pay attention to before the broadcast? And what message would you give to the fans who are looking forward to the broadcast?

Sakura: The second season is finally starting!

The romance of the story also begins. Keep an eye out for the final developments.

Be sure to take your eyes and ears back to the amazing, improved visuals and sound!
