To commemorate the release of the special edition, a stage greeting was held at Shinjuku Piccadilly on Friday, September 20th to commemorate the screening of the special edition of “Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM”. Soichiro Hoshi (voice of Kira Yamato), Kotono Mitsuishi (voice of Murrue Ramius), Houko Kuwashima (voice of Agnes Giebenrath), and director Mitsuo Fukuda appeared on stage.
The event was attended by Soichiro Hoshi, who plays Kira Yamato, Kotono Mitsuishi, who plays Murrue Ramius, Houko Kuwashima, who plays Agnes Giebenrath, and director Mitsuo Fukuda. As the four of them appeared in the venue, which was already filled with anticipation before the screening, the event began with loud applause and cheers.
Even after the screening ended, many fans expressed their desire to see it in the theater, and it has been decided that a limited-time special edition screening will be held in the first phase from September 20th to October 3rd, and the second phase from November 1st to November 14th.
Hoshi: “I’m Souichirou Hoshi, the voice of Kira Yamato, papa!”
Mitsuishi: “I’m Mitsuishi Kotono, who voiced Marie Ramius, the pink Haro-chan, Ezalia Jules, and Frey’s schoolgirl friend who appeared in episode 1.”
Kuwashima began by saying, “Can I just say a few words?” and then expressed her feelings in the voices of the characters she has played so far: Frey Alster, Nathalle Badilour, and Stella Louché. She then concluded by saying, “I’m Kuwashima Houko, who plays Agnes Giebenrath.” Hoshi continued, “Everyone, you all got a special treat today,” and the venue was filled with excitement at this extravagant self-introduction.
Director Fukuda commented, “I’m grateful that we were able to have this opportunity. (For the special edition) we upgraded as many parts as we wanted that didn’t make it in time for the theatrical release. We were able to get the budget thanks to the film being a hit (laughs). We hadn’t originally planned to include an epilogue cut at the end, but we hurriedly made it as a way of showing our gratitude to those who came to the cinema, and we made it in time, and we’re currently working on (the second installment) for November! Even if you’re watching the main feature for the first time, I think you’ll notice that we’ve corrected more than 20 cuts, so I hope you enjoy it.”
As the special edition screening began, when asked how he felt, Hoshis confessed his gratitude, saying, “It feels like the finale was yesterday, and when I think about a new SEED FREEDOM starting, I feel like it’s not over yet. I think everyone and I have been waiting so long that I wanted to make the whole year SEED FREEDOM YEAR, so I’m really happy.”
Regarding the popularity of this film, Mitsuishi and Kuwashima said, “I had seen how popular it was on the Internet, but as actors, I couldn’t really comprehend the large box office numbers. I think it’s all thanks to the audience. When I saw the preview, the energy of the images was so great that it was impossible to keep up with it in just one viewing, so I’m convinced that this will be a hit.” (Mitsuishi)
“There are a lot of passionate people who can watch one film dozens or even hundreds of times, so they’re happy movies that make you want to watch them over and over again,” said Kuwashima, who seemed to realize just how popular the “SEED series” is.
The conversation then turned to a certain similarity between the character Kuwashima plays in SEED.
Mitsuishi said, “When I saw the name Agnes played by Kuwashima Houko, I knew this was it.” The director continued by revealing that originally, Agnes, played by Kuwashima, was meant to be killed by Shura, but the structure of the film changed so she was kept alive.
In response to Kuwashima’s outlook for Agnes as the only surviving character in the “SEED” series, Mitsuishi offered her some advice: “As Murrue, you should teach Agnes. Agnes is like that because she hasn’t met a good adult yet.” Kuwashima responded by declaring, “I’ll become Murrue’s apprentice!”, which elicited laughter from the audience.
Regarding the characters they played, Hoshi reflected on working with the senior voice actor, saying, “To me, Mitsuishi-san is very much like Murrue, and it’s really reassuring to have her on my side. Kuwashima-san is another new character who really gets close to Kira, but without Agnes I wouldn’t have been able to get so close to Lacus, so in that sense I’m grateful.”
今回の特別版は、約500カット以上がアップグレードされており、福田監督は「(アップグレードした箇所は)初見ですぐわかると思います。最後の戦闘シーンのメカを特にアップグレードしてありますのでご注目ください」と見どころをあげた。
さらに監督自ら書き下ろしのエピローグカットについても「第１弾と絶賛いま制作中の第２弾は違うキャラが出てきますので」と楽しみにしている会場のファンに嬉しいコメント。
締めのメッセージとして保志は「特別版上映始まるということでまだまだこれからSEED FREEDOMを楽しんでいただきたいです。三石さんと桑島さんとこうして一緒に舞台挨拶するのも貴重な機会ですし、これからさらに盛り上がっていていろんな展開があると１ファンとして嬉しいです。これからも応援お願いいたします」と会場に集まったファンに呼びかけた。
福田監督は「おかげさまでロングランヒットさせていただきました。自分はあまり数字は気にしていないのですが、スタッフの方たちにとっては、何らかの数字が残るというのは自分たちが関わった作品として、「僕もあの作品手伝ったんだよ」と言える環境に繋がるのはすごくいいことだなと思うし、作るからにはみんなが幸せになってほしいですし。
そういう風に願いを込めて作った結果としての興収だと思いますので、これはファンの皆さんと一緒に作り上げた数字だと思っています。
もう少しで50億届くと思いますが、それまでみなさん応援よろしくお願いいたします」と熱いコメントを送ると、会場からは割れんばかりの拍手と声援が起こり、賑やかな雰囲気の中、イベントは幕を下ろした。
