Before the climax, Kawashima Reiji, who plays Asano Taiyo, Hondo Kaede, who plays Yozakura Mutsumi, and Konishi Katsuyuki, who plays Yozakura Kyoichiro, gathered again to talk about what has happened so far in “The Great Work of the Yozakura Family” and what to look forward to in the future.
–Taiyo has started to seem more reliable since the second season, how do you feel about playing him so far?
Reiji Kawashima (hereinafter, Kawashima): First of all, Yae’s weapon, Taiyo, has changed from a gun to a sword. When she was using a gun, I didn’t really add any ad-libs during the fights, but when it became a sword, there were some parts where I added voice acting, and the action will be more interesting, so I’m looking forward to seeing it (※The finished footage hadn’t been seen at the time of the interview).
— Yae no Ni, “Rain”, first appeared in the fight against Hakuja.
Kawashima: I was able to record the scene with Hakuja with Sato Rina-san, who plays Hakuja, and it was really good! It was a very heated battle. In that scene, it felt like the sun was riding on it, so being alone while surrounded by enemies was a situation that didn’t happen in the first season, and in terms of voice actors, Ueda Yuji-san (Hika Makoto) and Yamadera Kouichi-san (Yozakura Momo) were there…
Katsuyuki Konishi (hereinafter, Konishi): The cast of this work is just too impressive (laughs).
Kawashima: That’s right! (laughs) Whenever the enemy gets stronger, a stronger voice actor comes along. But, since Taiyo is getting stronger, I have to act in a way that won’t lose to this senior voice actor. But I remember concentrating during the one-on-one battle while thinking about how I can fight with my acting ability. I thought, “If I don’t grow more, Taiyo will leave me behind, so I have to work hard!”
–What did you think of Mutsumi?
Hondo Kaede (hereinafter, Hondo): Mutsumi is the head of the Yozakura family and has her own fighting ability, so she basically provides support from the rear and prays for everyone’s safety.
–Speaking of the second season, the line “Don’t leave me behind…!” when he shares some of his blood with Taiyo in episode 16 was very memorable.
Kawashima: When she spoke to Taiyo there, I thought it was a side of Mutsumi that we hadn’t heard much about before.
Hondo: It’s all about how well Mutsumi can handle it… Mutsumi has already experienced a lot as a member of the Yozakura family, so she’s unfazed and has a certain degree of nerve. But when she finds a husband she loves and his life is in danger, I thought a lot about how well Mutsumi can handle it.
–Even if you donate blood, there’s the worry of not knowing how it will turn out.
Hondo: That’s right. Giving blood might kill her, or it might bring her back to life. I thought it was cool that Mutsumi made that decision because she didn’t know what would happen. Even if it was a gamble, it was cool that she chose to try it if there was even a 1 chance she could save her. She is someone who needs to be protected, but she is also independent. Even though she is still young, I thought she already has feelings as the head of the Yozakura family.
–What about you, Konishi-san? You also faced off against Momo in episode 16.
Konishi: Basically, Kyoichiro is a character who is always smiling and you never know what he’s thinking, so even when he’s angry, I try to laugh while getting angry and not show any seriousness, and I actually acted that way, but when he confronts Momo, I completely removed that and made it a laugh that comes from anger. That’s how serious the conversation was.
Also, Yamadera-san’s acting is irritating! (laughs) It’s not like, “This damn old man!”, but he throws stuff like that at me, so in that sense it was very easy to build a relationship with him.
きっといろいろなことがあったんだろうなとか、いろんな思いをしてきて、それを飲み込んだり出したり、そういうのを経験してきての今があるというのは、山寺さんのお芝居からも感じました。
さっき、川島くんが先輩声優と戦わなければいけないって話していましたけど、僕もそれと同じ気持ちで、山寺さんには勝たなきゃ！っていう気持ちでしたね（笑）。きっと他人だったら、そこまで怒りとか、負けたくないとかいう気持ちを感じないかもしれないんですけど、自分の家族であるというのがあるから、すごくイライラするんだろうなって。
凶一郎は全体的には俯瞰で見ていて、常に冷静にいろんなことを考えてコントロールをしていると思うんです。だから、それ以外のところは通常通りで、お芝居的には（第2クールになっても）今まで通りで演じています。
たぶん凶一郎が怒って暴走しちゃうと、収拾がつかなくなるような気がするので、なるべくクールでいようとは思っています。凶一郎と長女の二刃がいることで、何かあったとしても最後は尻を拭ってくれるじゃないけど、そういう存在でいたいなとは思っていました。
