This animated film is based on the manga “A Silent Voice” by Yoshitoki Oima, which won first place in the Men’s Edition of “This Manga is Amazing! 2015” and the New Artist Award at the 19th Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize, and is produced by Kyoto Animation, a studio known for its beautiful artwork.
Despite its small nationwide release in September 2016 on just 120 screens, the film generated a great deal of buzz by grossing 2.3 billion yen and attracting an audience of 1.77 million people by the following year.
As the relationships and feelings of the characters change, will their heartfelt voices reach the people they want to reach…?
The story begins when Shoya, a so-called bad kid like the ones you’d find in every class, “bullies” Shoko, a transfer student who is hearing impaired and can only communicate through writing.
Ueno Naoka becomes irritated by the fact that her daily routine, including classes, is often disrupted, and begins to take part in the bullying. Sahara
Miyoko sympathizes with Shoko, who begins to become isolated, but the bullying spreads to her and she is forced to transfer schools.
Kawai Miki laughs and overlooks the bullying, believing that “I’m not a bully.”
And Shoya ends up being the one being bullied because of his bullying…!
Having been on the receiving end of bullying, Shoya is no longer able to look other people in the eye. However, as he enters high school and tries to make amends to those around him, including Shoko, he is surrounded by Nagatsuka, who becomes his “best friend” through a coincidence, and Yuzuru, Shoko’s sister who cares for Shoko. After reuniting with Shoko, Shoya’s daily life begins to move forward.
The story is woven with the worries and thoughts of each character intertwining. From whose perspective will you watch it?
Because Shoko is hearing impaired, sign language appears frequently in the story.
Shoya, now a high school student, also uses simple sign language, which he must have studied hard to use. Therefore, although simple greetings and sign language used in daily life are used, there are not many lines that explain the meaning of the sign language.
Even if it were spoken as words, rather than sign language, would it be possible to interpret it as the other person intended? It seems that such intentions are also hidden behind the reason why the meaning of the sign language is not presented.
本作で誰しもが目を瞠るのは、登場人物たちを演じる声優陣の芝居力。特に、聴覚障害のある硝子を演じる声優・早見沙織さんの、言葉にならない発語のリアルさが、多くの人を驚かせ魅了しています。
また、他者との関わりを避けて来た高校生の将也を演じているのは声優・入野自由さん。心を閉ざしがちに過ごして来た将也が、高校生となって新しい親友に出会い、硝子たちと再会することで過去と向き合っていくという難しい心情の移り変わりを、実に自然体で演じていて必聴です。
ここでは、思春期である高校生たちの心の葛藤などを演じた声優陣をご紹介します。
小学生の頃はガキ大将。しかし硝子とのある出来事以降、周囲から孤立してしまう。以来、孤独や自己嫌悪と闘いながら日々を過ごしている。
先天性の聴覚障害を持つ少女。コミュニケーションの困難や失敗を日常的に経験してきたせいで、他人との摩擦を避けるため、愛想笑いが癖になっている。
硝子の妹。中学生。大好きな姉のことを守るために、周囲には強くふるまっている。そのため、少年のような外見で自分のことを「オレ」と呼ぶようになった。
高校での将也のクラスメイトで、初めてできた友だち。マイペースな性格。モコモコ頭とぽっちゃり体型のユーモラスな佇まいで、将也を「やーしょー」と呼び、いつも行動を共にする。
小学校時代の将也のクラスメイト。クラスの仲良しグループではリーダー的な存在。その性格から周囲とぶつかることが多い。実は将也への恋心を密かに抱き続けている。
そばかすが特徴の優しい女の子。孤立しはじめた硝子に寄り添った結果、自身もいじめに遭い不登校になる。高校生になって将也たちと再会を果たす。
小・中・高と学級長を務めるマジメで正義感が強い優等生。高校でクラスメイトとなった真柴に好意を持っている。
高校での将也のクラスメイト。頭も良く目立つイケメン男子だが、将也に興味を持ち仲良くなる。
映画『聲の形』を制作したのは、作画の美しさにおいて定評のある「京都アニメーション」。本作でもその本領を発揮しています。

＜STORY＞
ガキ大将だった小学６年生の石田将也は、転校生の少女、西宮硝子へ無邪気な好奇心を持つ。「いい奴ぶってんじゃねーよ。」自分の想いを伝えられないふたりはすれ違い、分かり合えないまま、ある日硝子は転校してしまう。やがて五年の時を経て、別々の場所で高校生へと成長したふたり。あの日以来、伝えたい想いを内に抱えていた将也は硝子のもとを訪れる。「俺と西宮、友達になれるかな？」再会したふたりは、今まで距離を置いていた同級生たちに会いに行く。止まっていた時間が少しずつ動きだし、ふたりの世界は変わっていったように見えたが――。
