The script for this work is written by screenwriter Reiko Yoshida. This work is the second collaboration between the two, who have worked together on many masterpieces such as the “K-ON!” series and the TV anime “The Tale of the Heike.”
This time, the duo has revealed some behind-the-scenes stories from the production!
Director Yamada, who directed this film, and screenwriter Yoshida Reiko first teamed up on the 2009 TV anime “K-ON!”
Yoshida also wrote the script for Yamada’s 2011 feature film K-ON! The Movie, which was his directorial debut and achieved the remarkable feat of winning the Best Animation Award at the 35th Japan Academy Film Prize, the first time a late-night anime feature film had been awarded that honor. The two also teamed up again for A Silent Voice (2016), which won the Best Animation Award at the 40th Japan Academy Film Prize.
In 2022, the TV anime “The Tale of the Heike,” for which Yoshida wrote the script alongside Director Yamada and Science SARU, attracted a lot of attention.
What is it like working with Director Yamada and Mr. Yoshida, who have teamed up on numerous occasions? This film is a completely original story, but it started when Mr. Yoshida received a note from Director Yamada saying, “This is what I want to do, this is the kind of kids I want to portray.”
They began by discussing the setting of the work, and from there they came up with the story axis of setting it in a three-piece band and a mission school, and little by little the two of them created the characters and the story took shape.
During the animation production process, Director Yamada would storyboard and visualize the script provided by Yoshida, but when it came to the finer nuances of a scene, Yoshida would first write the script and show it to Director Yamada, and the script was finalized after they had had multiple discussions.
Director Yamada reflected on working with Yoshida, saying, “While working, I felt like it was a soul-to-soul exchange with the screenwriter. I thought, Oh, so that’s what Yoshida meant, I see. So that’s what it was trying to say. I saw a lot of things that I hadn’t been able to understand when I was just reading the book.” He described the series of tasks that were made possible because of the absolute trust and precise communication between the two of them, as “replying to a love letter I had received.”
Yoshida also seemed to be able to read Yamada’s mind when he saw the film that Yamada created from his script, saying, “I felt like I was seeing the trajectory of the director’s mind as he was creating the film.”
Director Yamada also said that the most important thing he kept in mind when making this film was that “the character has no confidence in himself, but he doesn’t blame others for the situation.”
“I try to do things on my own, and that’s both a weakness and a strength. I think that screenwriter Yoshida-san’s scripts are based on that conviction in every work, and being able to work together with Yoshida this time was once again what made us able to create this kind of story,” he said, showing confidence in the outcome of the work he created with Yoshida.
We hope you will come and see “Your Color,” brought to you by Director Yamada and Mr. Yoshida, who have been working together on films for over 10 years, on the big screen at the theater.
