This time, the fourth official interview project, an interview with Sakurai Toru, who plays Doudanuki Masakuni, has been released.
Additionally, the fourth character PV, full of the charm of the Touken Danshi, has also arrived.
— Regarding “Touken Ranbu Kai -Ten Den: Close Samurai” (hereinafter “Ten Den”), what was your impression of the story after reading the script?
“The story was beautifully connected to the anime ‘Kyoden’ (‘Touken Ranbu Kai – Kyoden Moyuru Honnoji-‘), so I thought it was interesting and that the Saniwa (viewers) would definitely enjoy it. I was reading the script wondering how the Touken Danshi would be involved in the history that everyone knows, and how it would be portrayed.
Also, there is a scene where Toudanuki Masakuni and Tsurumaru Kuninaga are working, which I found interesting. I imagined Tsurumaru gathering information while slacking off, but Toudanuki working diligently while recording.
- Regarding the character you play, Doudanuki Masakuni, were there any differences from your previous role in the anime “Touken Ranbu Kai – Kyoden: Moeyuru Honnoji-” and were there any new charms to the character that you discovered?
The script was based on the first work in the “Stage Touken Ranbu” series, “Stage Touken Ranbu: Kyoden: Moyuru Honnoji,” so I got the impression that Doudanuki in this work also contains elements of the actor Takeshi Naoki from the stage version. I had the image of Doudanuki as someone who doesn’t say much, but this time there were scenes where he makes sarcastic remarks and jokes, and I got the new impression that he’s a sword, but also human.
–From your perspective, Sakurai-san, what did you think of the team spirit among the six members?
“They worked well together and I thought they were a really good team. Shokudaikiri played a supporting role for the unit, and Tsurumaru was the oldest sword among them, so he watched over the unit from one step behind. And thanks to Hasebe, Yamabagiri became the catalyst for change. What surprised me most was how Doudanuki acted as the lubricant for the unit. When Okurikara said to him in the battle, “I was enough on my own,” he replied, “I’m glad you were here.” I had the image of Doudanuki being the type to say something back. It was a really well-balanced unit.”
–Please tell us if there were any scenes that were fun to act in or that were your favorite scenes.
“Of course I like the battle scenes, but I also like the parts that depict the daily lives of the Touken Danshi, including the other series. They wake up in the morning, wash their faces, harvest vegetables, cook dinner, and eat it all together… When I see them moving around in the anime, I can fill in my imagination and think, ‘So this is how they all live their lives,’ and it’s fun.”
The same goes for his behavior during missions. As I said earlier, there are scenes in “Konnosuke’s Tale” where he interacts with humans, and he checks with Konnosuke to see if helping them will have an impact on history. I acted while thinking, “So this is how they interact on the battlefield,” and, “So he helps people even when he’s not ordered to. What a good guy!”
–What do you think are the highlights of Doudanuki Masakuni in this film?
“I think it has to be the battle scenes. When I spoke with AKIRA, who is in charge of the illustrations for Doudanuki, we said, ‘There are many different developments in the Touken Ranbu series, but Doudanuki doesn’t fight very often.’ However, I think Doudanuki is one of the characters in the Honmaru who loves fighting, to the point that I would say he’s one of the best. I’m glad that he finally got the chance to fight this time. Please look forward to the battle scenes.”
