A release event for all three albums in the second series was held at a location in Tokyo on June 30th, and five of the voice actors who participated in the albums – Okawa Genki, Kikuchi Yuusei, Suzuki Ryota, Takatsuka Tomohito, and Lounsbery Arthur – took to the stage and gave an interesting talk about the work in front of a large crowd of fans.
This time, we interviewed the five members directly after the event! We asked them about what they kept in mind when covering famous songs that everyone knows, and their enthusiasm for their second live concert to be held in January 2025.
Arthur Lounsbury (hereinafter Lounsbury): I found this project very interesting, as it achieved a perfect balance between the voice actors’ own singing voices and the original songs.
When you sing a song by an artist you like, you feel respect and your singing style will be similar to theirs, but when I listen to other people’s covers, I feel that this is actually a good essence.
Ryota Suzuki (hereinafter, Suzuki): Many voice actors are good at singing. Moreover, they all have really good ears, so they can sing in a way that is close to the original song, and they can also sing with their own feelings and emotions. I think this project allows you to enjoy the wide variety of approaches that are typical of voice actors.
Tomohito Takatsuka (hereinafter, Takatsuka): I think it’s an incredibly wonderful piece of content. Even if a song is a masterpiece, I think some people will enjoy it and some won’t.
I would be very happy if people could discover the appeal of a song they didn’t know about because they listened to it because someone they support is singing it on this content.
Kikuchi Yuusei (hereinafter, Kikuchi): Another good thing is that we’ve narrowed down the eras (of songs we cover). For example, when singing for a karaoke project, you tend to think, “Should I sing songs that are popular now?” But with this project, I don’t have to be conscious of that, and I think it will be an opportunity for many people to get to know the great songs of the past, so I put even more effort into singing.
Genki Okawa (hereinafter, Okawa): I was simply nervous. Of course, I was confident when I sang, but it was a little intimidating to cover a famous hit song under my own name. But at the same time, when I heard about the offer, I thought “I did it!” and was very happy.
–Please tell us your impressions of the songs you covered in this second series and your thoughts on singing them. What were your thoughts when singing the songs, in terms of respecting the original songs and balancing them with your own style?
Kikuchi: The song I covered, “Niji” (Aqua Timez), is a song that really struck me when I heard a friend singing it at karaoke when I was attending vocational school and was having trouble with my assignments at school.
I was really encouraged when I thought that the words “It’s okay” and the lyrics “As we tie our shoelaces again, the wind gives us a push at the back” could also be interpreted as a “song of fresh departure” towards a new beginning.
Taiga: Good story.
Kikuchi: When covering a song that has such sentimental value to me, of course I have the original song as a reference point, but this time I’m singing it as myself and not as a character song, so I interpreted the lyrics and music in my own way, and made sure to sing it as honestly as possible while expressing myself.
Takatsuka: When I was asked to write a song, I didn’t hesitate to ask for a GLAY song! (laughs) I’ve been a big fan since I was in fifth grade, and GLAY’s songs have played such a big role in my life that I couldn’t be happier if I had the chance!
I was nervous during the recording, but I ended up humming “SOUL LOVE” so many times that I lost track of time, so it was a very happy time, and I sang it with lots of respect and love!!
大河：自分は「もう恋なんてしない」（槇原敬之）を歌唱する提案を頂いたのですが、おそらく原曲のアーティストの方々はご自身のいろんな経験を歌にしているわけじゃないですか。その歌詞からいろんなことを連想して歌うというのは、僕らが普段キャラソンでやっていることと似た作業だとは思うのですが、この曲の場合、僕は“いつもよりながめがいい 左に少し とまどってるよ”という経験がないので難しくて（笑）。
――この曲は“もう恋なんてしないなんて 言わないよ絶対”という有名なフレーズを含め、解釈の余地が広い歌詞ですよね。
大河：もともとの印象では、あまりプラスな思考の登場人物だとは思えなかったのですが、カバーするために改めて向き合ったなかで「この歌詞は強がりだったんだ」ということを感じて。もちろんその解釈が正解とは限らないですが、今回の僕はそういうイメージで歌わせていただきました。その意味では、カバーはその人の解釈が入るおもしろさがあるんだなって思いました。もちろん基本的には皆さんがどう受け取るかが一番大切だと思うので、ご感想をいただけると嬉しいです！
ランズベリー：僕の場合、今回カバーした「イケナイ太陽」（ORANGE RANGE）はもともと複数人のボーカルで歌っているグループ曲なので、原曲に寄せるのではなく、自分の中で一本軸を立てるスタンスで歌わせていただきました。
自分なりのロックテイストを出しつつ、歌詞にちょっとセクシーなフレーズがたくさん入っているので、ヤンチャな、少し危げなお兄さんのイメージで歌っています。
――『リコレ』の公式サイトに掲載されている楽曲コメントによると、最近観ていたドラマで登場人物がこの楽曲をカバーしているシーンが出てきたらしいですね。
ランズベリー：そうなんですよ。少し前に放送されていたとあるドラマで、プロのアーティストを目指している登場人物がこの曲を歌うシーンが何度も出てきて。それを観ていた直後に今回のオファーをいただいたので、もしかしたら『リコレ』のスタッフさんもこのドラマを観ていたのかな？と思いました（笑）。自分の中でもホットなタイミングだったので、楽しく歌うことができましたね。
――鈴木さんは、子供の頃から親の影響でよく聴いていたという「Tomorrow never knows」（Mr.Children）をカバーされています。
鈴木：Mr.Childrenさんは大好きで楽曲もめちゃくちゃ聴いていたので、桜井（和寿）さんの歌い方に寄せて歌うことは可能なんですよ。例えばイ行の喉の絞り方とかを寄せれば桜井さんっぽくなるんですけど、『リコレ』はモノマネを披露する場所ではないので、それは違うなと思って。ただリスペクトは含めたいので、桜井さんらしい抑揚や雰囲気は踏襲しつつ、鈴木崚汰としての真っ直ぐな歌い方で歌おうと思って取り組みました。
歌詞も最初は大人になってくすぶっている雰囲気だったのが、最後には“果てしない闇の向こうに”“手を伸ばそう”と前向きに進んで行く内容なので、ラスサビの転調するところで歌の雰囲気もガラッと変えてみたり、歌詞の内容に合わせて歌い方を構築していきました。
――昔から好きな曲を改めてカバーすることで、楽曲自体の捉え方や感じ方に変化はありましたか？
鈴木：すごく簡単な言い方になりますけど、「難しい楽曲なんだ」ということに気づきました。
大河：わかる！ 自分も「ここはこういう音だったんだ」っていう気づきがたくさんあった。
鈴木：カラオケだと自分が気持ちよく歌えればそれでいいので、そんなに音を大事にして歌わないじゃないですか。でも実際に商品になるものとして完璧な音でカバーさせていただくとなると、その難しさを実感して。
例えば“償う事さえ出来ずに”のところはカラオケだとスッと歌いがちですけど、実は譜割りや抑揚がかなり細かいんですよね。改めて難しい曲だと思いましたし、そんな楽曲を作って歌っている桜井さんはやっぱりすごいなと思いました。
