Iska, a member of the empire at war, and Aliceliese, the daughter of the queen of the imperial court, meet on the battlefield and are drawn to each other as they fight, but their love is forbidden. The battles become more intense and the tactics and strategies used to their advantage become more and more tactical. What will the fate of the two people be?
The anime was released in October 2020 and ended in December of the same year, but after about four years, Season II is about to begin. To commemorate the start of the broadcast, we bring you a conversation between Yusuke Kobayashi, who plays Iska, and Sora Amamiya, who plays Aliceliese. How have Iska and Alice’s feelings changed after Season I? They looked back on Season I and talked about the highlights of Season II.
–Looking back on Season 1, what are your thoughts and what episodes or scenes were most memorable?
Yusuke Kobayashi (hereinafter, Kobayashi): I felt that Season Ⅰ was like an introduction to the conflict between the Empire and the Imperial Court, after performing in Season Ⅱ. After laying out various hints about the relationship and situation between the two parties, the real story began here. Thinking about it like that, the flirting between Iska and Alice feels nostalgic now.
The most memorable scene was the one where I fought alongside Alice. I think the power of music and other elements made it a memorable scene.
Amamiya Sora (hereafter, Amamiya): I rewatched Season 1 the other day and thought it was very fulfilling. I also felt how destined Alice and Iska’s meeting was. Even though they are enemies, the two of them work well together, and when they fight together, they work perfectly together. I thought they really were destined to be together.
Also, because it is a story between countries, the positions and circumstances of the characters surrounding the two are also very well thought out. Political maneuvers and intentions are also intertwined, and each character has a proper role to play, so it was a fulfilling season I.
The most memorable scene was in episode 7 (“Paradise – Alice’s Longest Night”), where Rin puts sleeping pills in Isuka’s juice and takes her off in the car (lol). It would be bad if either side found out, but when Alice sees Isuka sleeping next to her, she pokes him on the cheek and blows him away when he leans on her. I thought that Alice is just as laid back as ever, no matter what, and it was also good to see the heartwarming moments between Alice and Rin. It was also good to see Isuka properly disappointed in Alice at least once. Isuka says, “You’ve done things like this” (lol).
–It’s common for two enemies to be attracted to each other, but it’s rare for them to work together, let alone become so intimate.
Amemiya: It’s a perfect balance (laughs). It’s also kind of heartwarming.
Kobayashi: That’s right. There are often lovey-dovey scenes in between tense scenes. Maybe that’s why it doesn’t tire you out so much when you watch it.
雨宮：確かに。あとキャラクターたちがみんな、どこかに愛らしさがあって。イスカは純朴な少年ですし、ミスミスもあれで隊長という……。
小林：こら！（笑） でも、まだ隊長らしいところを見たことがないような……。
雨宮：どうして隊長になれたのかな？
小林：何かあるんじゃない？ もしかしたら頭がすごくいいのかもしれない。
雨宮：いいのかな？ ジンにバカにされている印象があるし、しかも体力もないし、走るのも遅いし、泳げもしないし。
小林：そこまで言う？（笑）
雨宮：あと、すごくストイックに見えて、実は抜けている燐とか。あれでドジっ娘で、よく空回りしたり、後先考えないところとか。
小林：みんな、どこか欠けているよね。
――そんなコミカルな緩和の時とシリアスな緊張状態が1話の中にあるから楽しめるんですよね。
雨宮：キャラクターも多いし、ずっとバチバチだと疲れるでしょうから。
――またイスカとアリスは、戦闘シーンでは凛々しくカッコいいのに、日常パートになるとおもしろかったり、かわいいギャップがあるのもいいですね。
小林：あまりにもその両方での経験値の差が大きいんですよね。戦いに身を投じることの経験値はレベル100くらいあるけど、人間関係、ことに恋愛に対してはレベル1くらいしかない状態なので、演じる時もキャラを意識せずに、セリフから受けた印象をそのままお芝居で表現しました。Season ⅡではSeason Ⅰ以上に甘めにしてほしいという要望がありました。だから、だいぶ胃もたれするかもしれません。
一同：（笑）
小林：そのくらい、たっぷりやっています。でもそれはストーリー上の大事な演出ゆえで、イチャイチャと緊張がいいバランスのキミ戦で序盤をそんなに甘くするということが何を意味するのか………是非先の展開を楽しみにしていて欲しいです。
――Season Ⅱシリーズが動き出した時の感想をお聞かせください。
小林：Season Ⅰが終わった時点で、「Season Ⅱもやります」とふわっと聞いていました。ここまでの間に、ラジオ（『小林裕介と雨宮天のキミ戦RADIO』）もやっていたこともあって、それほど間隔が空いていた気がしていなくて。キャスト同士でも集まって、ご飯を食べに行ったりもしていたので。
雨宮：みんな、仲良しで。今回が約4年ぶりの収録というのを聞いて、「そんなに経っていたんだ!?」と驚いたくらいで。
――ということは。今回のアフレコも難しさを感じたり、緊張することもなく？
雨宮：アフレコは緊張しました（笑）。役を演じるのは久しぶりなので、ちゃんとアリスを演じられるかなと思ったことに加えて、Season Ⅱは、制作チームが新しくなったこともあって。収録の一番最初のほうで、「Season Ⅱではバラエティ部分は思い切り突き抜けていきたい」と説明していただいたので、今までのアリスでありながらも、また違った色付けも必要なんだなと思った時、「その加減は大丈夫かな？」という不安もありました。
そして実際に演じてみたら「アリスは今期ではこんな表情もするんだ!?」という驚きや発見も多かったので、同じキャラを演じていつつも、新しいキャラを演じているように感じる瞬間もあって。そのバランス感をちゃんと取れているのかなという緊張感はありました。
小林：僕はあまり緊張しなかったですね。むしろSeason Ⅰの時は分散収録になりたての頃で、最初のほうは雨宮さんとも掛け合う機会もなかったので、ふわふわした状態でしたが、今回は可能な限り、掛け合っているシーンは一緒にグループで録れていて。だから掛け合いで生まれる、会話を重視したいなと思っていたので、Season Ⅰで作ったものをそれほど引きずらずに、もしズレていたら監督（稲葉友紀さん）やアフレコ演出（長崎行男さん）が正してくれると信じてやらせていただきました。
また雨宮さんがおっしゃっていたように、Season Ⅱはバラエティ色が強いシーンがあり、アリスだけ盛り上がっているように感じられるといけないので、アリスの熱量に負けないように恐れずにやりました。関係値がこの数年で育ったので、テスト収録が終わった休憩中にも「アレ、あそこまでやって良かったかな？」とか、「やりすぎだったよね？」などディスカッションした上で収録の本番に臨めたので、Season Ⅰの手探りだった時よりはやりがいがある収録でした。
――それだと、完成したアニメの1話を見るまではドキドキなのでは？
小林：そうですね。
雨宮：本当に（笑）。アフレコの時点では絵などもまだ作り掛けの状態だったので、「雰囲気がつかみ切れているのか」とか「テンション感がそろっているのか？」などまだドキドキ中です。またアフレコでは「もっとギャグを大きく、やっちゃっても大丈夫です」というリテイクが結構多かったので、私は最終的にうまく着地できたのだろうかという不安を抱えたまま、放送を待っています。
――「もっともっと」と言われても、どこまでやっていいのか、悩ましいですよね。
雨宮：Season Ⅰの12話で作り上げたものがあって、それを踏まえてのSeason Ⅱだけど、「もっともっと」となると、アリスでいられているかという想いもあって。Season Ⅱの序盤の展開はラブコメ色が特に強いので。
――「Season Ⅱ で、アリス、キャラ変してない？」とか言われたりして（笑）。
雨宮：それもあって。キャラが変わっちゃったと思われるのか、新たな魅力を発見できたなと思われるのかは、こちらの技量もあるのかなと思いますね。
