“The Atelier of Witch Hat” is a classic magic fantasy by Kamome Shirahama, currently being serialized in Kodansha’s “Monthly Morning Two”.
Coco, a girl from a small village, has always dreamed of becoming a wizard. However, people who are born without the ability to use magic cannot become wizards, and they must not witness the moment a spell is cast. For this reason, she had given up on her dream of becoming a wizard, but one day, she sees a wizard named Kifree, who visits the village, use magic, and learns a big secret.
The series began serialization in 2016, and the comics are currently up to volume 13. The total number of comics published worldwide has exceeded 5.5 million copies. It has won manga awards in France, Spain, South Korea, and other countries, and in 2020 it won the Eisner Award for Best Asian Work, attracting attention from all over the world. It was previously announced that it would be made into an anime in 2022, and it has now been revealed that it will be broadcast as a TV anime in 2025.
Animation will be handled by BUG FILMS, which has worked on many popular works such as “Zombie 100: 100 Things to Do Before You Become a Zombie” and “Summertime Render.” In the teaser video produced by the studio, the protagonist, a small village girl named Coco who dreams of becoming a witch, lives in a beautiful landscape like a painting, her eyes sparkling as she rides a magically controlled “feathered carriage,” and her fateful “encounter with magic” that comes in an unexpected way is depicted in dynamic animation, giving a sense of the beginning of a grand story.
The teaser visual also shows the “atelier” where Coco will study. The illustration is full of details, such as warm sunlight streaming in, stacks of books, and many quills, making it an exciting sight to see.
The main staff was also announced, with Watanabe Ayumu, known for “Children of the Sea” and “Nikko-chan of the Fishing Port”, as director. Character design will be handled by Unabara Kairi, and music will be handled by Kitamura Yuka. Comments were also received from Director Watanabe, Unabara, Kitamura, and the original author Shirahama. Keep an eye out for further news on the TV anime “The Atelier of Witch Hat”.
