Monthly Afternoon” and has sold over 7 million copies, has been made into a live-action movie. It has been decided that the movie will be released on Friday, August 9, 2024, starring Atsushi Maeda Go (the role of Yaguchi Yatora), director Kentaro Hagiwara, and scriptwriter Reiko Yoshida.

I was aware of the work Blue Period, but had never seen it, so I read the original story after hearing about it. Of course I was drawn to the work as a whole, but I was also drawn to the character of Ryuji Ayukawa, and I was worried about whether I would be able to play this character. But at the same time, I couldn’t stop feeling excited.
I was truly honored to be entrusted with the role of Yuka-chan, who is such a wonderful character and the overwhelming charm of this work. I put my heart and soul into this role so that I could faithfully enhance Ryuji Ayukawa’s charm as much as possible. In terms of preparing for the role, I practiced Japanese painting, but I also pushed myself and Yuka-chan physically to the point where I didn’t feel any boundaries between them. Although it was difficult at times, it was really fun.
I would be happy if everyone could see Ryuji Ayukawa like that. I’ve packed everything I can do, what I need to do, and what I want to do into this work, just like Yuka-chan and Hachitora. Everyone, please come to the theater.
When I heard about this story, it was even more relevant to me as someone who enjoys art, both as a hobby and as a means of output.
Also, the original work was originally known as a stoic work with art as its theme, and I felt a lot of sympathy for the character of Setasuke Takahashi, so I feel very fateful.
Pursuing what you love is never an escape or an easy thing to do, and along the way you will be hurt many times and face many layers of walls. First of all, I felt the joy and anticipation of being able to work with director Hagiwara again, and at the same time, I felt the excitement of playing a key role in the story, Morimaru Senpai, who was the one who created the opportunity to change Yatora’s life.
I haven’t had many opportunities to touch the world of painting until now, so every practice period was full of learning. It was not something I would have had the chance to experience, so it was a truly valuable experience. The movie is full of highlights, from the calmness of the school to the tense atmosphere of the cram school, so please look forward to it.
(Watching the finished movie) I expressed a lot of things that I couldn’t see in the manga, such as the scenery that I couldn’t see when I was writing it as a manga, the facial expressions of the characters played by the actors, and the sense of the “pause” between words. I was honestly impressed by the movie “Blue Period,” which gave me a sense of reality in each scene, and was not artificial. The cast members spent a lot of time practicing painting, and when I first saw them on set, I was amazed to see that everyone’s movements were similar to those of a painter. Above all, when I met Maeda-san, I called her my classmate Yaguchi-kun.
It was so awkward that I felt like I had just met someone. How do you turn this work into a movie from the planning stage? I’m really glad that I was able to entrust this project to Director Hagiwara, who has a clear vision of his own and always wanted to deliver his film to the audience. I would be happy if everyone could feel the passion that people feel when they try to start something.
The most important thing in adapting Tsubasa Yamaguchi’s completed work “Blue Period” into a live-action film was the question at the heart of the original work: “Is art a talent?” ” as a movie. Is it a waste to try something you like even if you have no talent? Can passion be a weapon that surpasses talent? 萩原監督は本作で<本物であること>にこだわり、練習用に描かれたものも含めると本編に登場する絵画は合計401枚にものぼり、300枚以上がこの映画のために描き下ろされたもの。また、登場するキャスト陣は撮影前に時に半年以上の時間をかけて絵画練習を行い、絵を描く所作や動きを体得。更に、劇中に登場する絵画の一部は実際にキャストが描いたものが採用されています。
脚本にはアニメ「ブルーピリオド」を手掛け、『劇場版 ヴァイオレット・エヴァーガーデン』や現在公開中の『デッドデッドデーモンズデデデデデストラクション』の吉田玲子さん。数々のアニメ作品を手掛けてきた彼女が、本作でも原作の魅力を映画として昇華させ、観客の胸を熱くする挑戦の物語を作り上げました。
音楽には、『キャラクター』『ナラタージュ』をはじめとした作品のサウンドトラックを手掛け、『映画 えんとつ町のプペル』でアニー賞最優秀音楽賞にノミネートされた経験を持つYaffleさん。本作ではシーンに合わせてボーカル入りの楽曲を新たに書き下ろすなど従来の制作の枠組みを超えた取り組みで、音楽が作品に一層の厚みとリアリティをもたらしています。
ブルーピリオド展が、4月12日(金)より大阪南港ATCギャラリーにて「ブルーピリオド展in大阪」として開催。原作漫画の原画などが展示されるほか、「映画『ブルーピリオド』の作り方」と題して、眞栄田郷敦さん、高橋文哉さん、板垣李光人さんの劇中での衣装や、それぞれのキャストが撮影前に絵画練習を行って描いた絵画が展示されます。会場は写真撮影も可能なので、ご自身で展示を記録にも収めながら、漫画そして映画のブルーピリオドの世界に没入してみてはいかがでしょうか。
