This work was serialized in magazines in 1986 by Yuichi Sasamoto, author of “Moretsu Space Pirates” (originally known as Miniskirt Space Pirates), and was published in paperback in 2004 in 20 volumes and 52 episodes. This is an original series and was also published in drama cassette bunko and other publications.
It was made into an OVA in 1989 and 1991, and the author himself wrote the screenplay for the 1991 version of “DELUXE ARIEL”, which won the 36th Nebula Award in the Japanese feature category in 2005. In recent years, reproductions of previously released models, such as plastic model kits, have been produced.
Initially, the OVA was only released on VHS/LD in Japan, but the original 35mm negative film was found and it was revived as a new negative scan HD remastered Blu-ray BOX.
This product will be released in a limited edition for use in the BD-BOX with the permission of Masahisa Suzuki, the original illustrator of “ARIEL” who passed away in 2022, of the “unpublished ARIEL drawings” he drew during his lifetime. In addition, the Sonorama Bunko cassette version (all 3 volumes) that was released when the original series was serialized has now been reprinted and included in the bonus DVD.
