Animate Times interviewed Souma Saito, who plays Kenshin Himura, and Ayaka Yamane, who plays Misao Makimachi. In addition to highlights from the opening, we asked them about their memories of Kyoto and the people they consider to be their masters.
-What kind of response have you received since the first season aired?
Saito Soma, voice of Himura Kenshin (hereinafter, Saito): As a team, we were first relieved that we were able to deliver to everyone safely what we had poured all our effort into.
Since it aired, I’ve been happy to receive letters like, “This is the first time I’ve seen Rurouni Kenshin,” and “I’ve always liked it, but this new anime was also really good,” and I was also impressed by the comments from my colleagues like, “When will the next one be made? I can’t wait to see it!”
–Yamane-san, you will be participating fully from the second season onwards, but what kind of image did you have for this series?
Yamane Ayaka, who plays Makimachi Misao (hereafter referred to as Yamane): I read the Rurouni Kenshin manga when I was a student. I also watched all the live-action movies that were released afterwards. That’s how much I love the work.
-Which character did you like the most?
Yamane: (Shinomori) Souji was the obvious choice. He’s cool, doesn’t say much, and is mysterious. But he’s also strong, and that struck a chord with me when I was about a sixth grader (laughs). At the time, I wasn’t the type to like the main character for some reason, but after working on this project, Kenshin became my number one pick. I like how warm-hearted and kind he is, and how he can’t just leave people in trouble alone.
–The setting will move from Tokyo to Kyoto in the second season. This is a popular episode in the original work, so what were your thoughts when you read that part of the story?
Saito: First of all, the story is getting exciting. The number of characters increases all at once, the battles become more diverse, and the human drama is depicted in greater depth, so it’s a very satisfying read.
At the same time, when I re-read the original work, I was surprised at how well-paced it was. Perhaps because the battle with the Ten Swords was so memorable, I had the impression that it was going to be a long-term battle, but it was actually quite compact in terms of the number of episodes. I felt that the story had a great sense of rhythm.
Yamane: When I read it as a child, the fierce battle scenes left a strong impression on me. However, after I was chosen to play Misao, I reread the original work and thought that it expressed the connections and relationships between people and the movements of their hearts very vividly. I felt that Misao was also experiencing a greater emotional turmoil than she had ever experienced before as she met Kenshin and various other people, so I wanted to portray that part carefully.
— In the beginning of the second season, Kenshin and Misao act together. Please tell us again about your impression of Misao.
山根：先ほど蒼紫様が好きだったとお伝えしましたが、実写映画を見ていちばん心惹かれたのは、土屋太鳳さんが演じられていた操だったんです。土屋さんが演じた操からは、無邪気だけれど、とても凛々しくて、まさに女性が憧れる存在だなという強さを感じて。私もオーディションの時からそんな操を演じられたらと強く思っていたので、今回決めていただけてすごく嬉しかったです。
斉藤：操は非常に活発で明るく元気で、第一期までの物語にいそうでいなかった絶妙なポジションのキャラクターだと思います。第一期の最後で剣心は、みんなを助けるために自分はこれから一人で生きていくという決意を胸に、薫殿（神谷 薫）たちと別れて京都へと向かいました。ともすると、展開的には結構暗めの雰囲気になりがちですが、操の登場によって、物語にポジティブな流れが生まれるんですよね。それがすごく素敵だなと思いました。
――序盤は特にお二人でかけ合うシーンも多かったと思います。収録はいかがでしたか？
斉藤：思いつめていた剣心にめげずにぶつかってくる操によって、徐々に剣心もフラットな状態に戻してもらえたと感じていました。そういう意味でも、操は第二期の序盤で重要なキャラクターだと思っています。
山根：操って、原作からも分かる通り、あまり距離感や場所を気にせず大きな声で話す子だと思うんです。なので、京都へ向かう道中で剣心とかけ合うシーンも、距離感はほぼ意識せずに、相手に言葉をかけているようでかけていないイメージを持ってお芝居をしていました。そこを斉藤さんがくみ取って、緩急をすごく出してくださったんです。そういう受け取り方をしてくださったから、操と剣心の心の距離が縮まるにつれて、操の音の幅も自然に変わっていったような気がしています。
――思いつめているというお話もありましたが、操によって剣心はコミカルな表情も見せます。それだけでなく、戦闘シーンでは熾烈な戦いを繰り広げたり、人斬り抜刀斎という過去があったりと、様々な面を持っているキャラクターです。斉藤さんは剣心の芝居で意識されていることはありますか？
斉藤：一言で言うならば、「相手」ですかね。
――「相手」、でしょうか。
斉藤：はい。例えば戦いであったら、相手がどれくらい強いか、どれくらい殺しに来ているのか。操との会話なら、怒っているのを感じながら喋っているのか、ご機嫌で御庭番衆のことを喋っているのを「はいはい」と聞いているのか。ロジカルな部分ではなくて、そのときの緊張感の度合いみたいなものを数値化せずに、少し曖昧なグラデーションで感じられればと思いながら演じていました。
第一期のテーマでもあったんですけど、剣心は自分では自分の実力を出し切れない、環境がそうさせないと引き出さない領域の能力があると思うんです。彼は鵜堂刃衛や蒼紫、石動雷十太など様々な強い敵と相対しましたが、いちばんその領域を引き出されて闘ったのは、斎藤 一でした。振り返ってみたら、演じるうえでも、シチュエーションや相対する相手に身を委ねることを大事にしていたようにも思います。
――なるほど。
斉藤：剣心は確かに多面性がある人物だと思いますが、それを引き出してくれるのは相対する誰かだと思うんです。シリアスな場面でもコメディシーンでも日常会話でも、こういう状況だからこういうお芝居をしようと決め込み過ぎず、対話することを念頭に置いて演じていました。
