The anime “Overlord” is based on the hugely popular novel series, which has sold over 14 million copies in total. This is the first completely new movie in the series, and is the long-awaited film adaptation of the “Holy Kingdom Arc”, which is also popular among fans of the original work.
This time, we interviewed Satoshi Hino, who plays Ainz Ooal Gown, the main character of “Overlord.” We asked him about a variety of topics, including the highlights of the movie, his thoughts on the character he has played since the first season, and his memories of the character.
-First of all, how did you feel when it was decided that the Holy Kingdom Arc would be made into an animated movie?
Hino Satoshi, who plays Ainz (hereinafter, Hino): Up until now, there have been compilations released in theaters, but when I heard that we would be able to deliver a completely new Overlord movie to everyone this time, I was excited and happy.
–The Holy Kingdom arc has a slightly unusual timeline.
Hino: That’s right. It’s an episode that takes place in the middle of the fourth season, or in other words, on a different axis, so those who are not familiar with “Overlord” may be a little confused by the flow of the story.
However, it has been made in such a way that it can be understood as a story even when viewed on its own, and I think that even people who have never heard of “Overlord” before will enjoy it even more if they watch the TV series after watching this movie.
–What did you find appealing about the Holy Kingdom arc?
Hino: In a nutshell, I think it’s a story that condenses the stance and way of thinking of Ainz and the forces of Nazarick in “Overlord.”
Even if you watch the movie alone, I think you’ll be able to understand the general flow of the story, but because it depicts things like Ainz’s charm and charisma from the perspective of the new character Neia, I feel that a unique feature of this movie is that it makes it easier to understand how the people who were saved by Ainz become attracted to him.
–Due to Ainz’s position, he is often not involved in the story, but in this work he has a lot of direct interactions with Neia.
Hino: Although it is a structure based on the original work, there are some episodes in which Ainz hardly appears at all, which was a difficult point in making it into an anime work.
This time, it’s from Neia’s point of view rather than Ainz’s, and it’s interesting to see how she is influenced by Ainz as she sees him up close. In the original work, there are some parts that focus more on Ainz, but the movie version puts more emphasis on Neia’s side, and I think they did a good job of creating the highlights of the “Holy Kingdom Arc” within the limited time frame.
–Have you seen the finished video already?
Hino: I had the chance to see it a little earlier. Overlord has had many impressive battle scenes since the TV series. With this film version, there are more scenes with attention to detail, such as scenes that convey the high level of training of the knights, which was not shown in the TV series, and I thought it was a film that looks great on screen.
Not only the battle scenes, but even a single depiction of someone riding a horse, with the way the scenery flowing before their eyes, was very cool and realistic.
