The super popular fighting manga series, which has sold over 100 million copies in total, is being adapted for the stage for the first time! “Grappler Baki” is a hugely popular fighting manga that was serialized in “Weekly Shonen Champion” (Akita Shoten) and adapted into a TV anime.
Sequels include “Baki”, “Hanma Baki”, “Baki-Dou”, “Baki-Dou”, and “Bakirahen”, and as of May 2024, the total number of copies of the book series has exceeded 100 million! “Grappler Baki”, which was said to be impossible to adapt into a live-action film, has finally been adapted for the stage! The world of “Grappler Baki” is perfectly recreated with authentic action scenes incorporating acrobatics and characters that look like they came straight out of the manga!
The role of Hanma Baki will be played by Yugo Sato, who is active in 2.5-dimensional stage productions such as the role of Hashibira Inosuke in the stage play “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba.” The role of Baki’s girlfriend, Matsumoto Kozue, will be played by Momoka Onishi, a former member of AKB48.
The cast will include Hinatano Shou as Katsumi Orochi, Sakuraba Taito as Kaoru Hanayama, Noma Rikō as Retsu Kaiō, Aizawa Ritta as Kiyosumi Kato, Yokoyama Masashi as Atsushi Suedō, Hashimoto Zenichi as Strydom, and from the world of martial arts, Kohiruimaki Takayuki as Hideaki Kano, and Takeda Kozo as Doppo Orochi! The script and direction will be handled by Tanaka Daisuke, who has worked on the stage production of “Sakigake!! Otokojuku”. The ultimate battle for the strongest will begin at Shinjuku FACE in December!
I’m Yugo Sato, who will be playing Baki Hanma. When I was chosen to play Baki, the first thing I thought was, “Isn’t that a muscle suit?”
I’m sure everyone involved in this production has thought about the pressure of having to get in shape. I believe the extent to which we can push ourselves physically and mentally until the day of the performance is the key to the quality of the production.

My name is Momoka Onishi, and I will be playing the role of Matsumoto Kozue this time.
“Baki” has been close to me since I was a child. I never thought I would be able to live in the world of Baki. It is a work that is loved by many people, regardless of age or gender.
With respect for the original work, I will watch over Baki’s growth as Matsumoto Kozue, and I will do my best to become stronger and stay strong through this work. I look forward to seeing you at Shinjuku FACE from December 4th to December 8th.
My name is Hinatano Sho, and I will be playing the role of Orochi Katsumi in “Baki: The Grappler Stage – Underground Arena Arc”. When I first heard about the role, I remember having mixed emotions: I was a little skeptical, wondering “Am I really the right person for this role?”, but I was also incredibly excited and happy, and felt the pressure of being able to take part in a series that has been loved for so long.
How will the world of Baki be expressed? I think it will be a production in which the actors will fight with all their might on stage, bringing to life the passion and power of the characters, so please look forward to it!
The Baki series has had a huge impact on my life, and I am truly honored to be able to play my favorite character, Kaoru Hanayama. I am really looking forward to bringing this series to the world with such a wonderful cast.
I too will be putting on even more weight in preparation for the actual event, and will do my utmost to deliver an overwhelming Hankazan performance.
I first encountered Baki when I was in high school. Grappler Baki has always been my bible. I read Baki and trained in karate, and I grew stronger with Baki every day during my school days. I’m excited to be able to appear on stage in Grappler Baki. I want to make a great debut on my first stage.
I will also be performing for the first time with Kozo Takeda, who I fought in K-1 in the past! I look forward to making my stage debut with all the professional actors. Welcome to the world of Grappler Baki!
