-What was your impression when you received the offer to work on Transformers: One?

Riho Yoshioka (hereinafter Yoshioka): When I received the offer, I was so excited and thrilled to hear from the Transformers franchise that I thought, “I can’t wait to read the script!”

-What were your thoughts when you read the script?

Yoshioka: This is a shocking work even for those who have followed the Transformers series so far. It is a story that solves many mysteries, such as why that battle happened and why (Optimus and Megatron) have that relationship. It will make you cry and warm your heart.

It’s heartwarming to see the Transformers depicted from the time when they couldn’t transform. They have weaknesses, but they want to be strong. I thought it was a moving script that condenses their strong feelings.

-What is your impression of the character you played, Elita?

Yoshioka: The character I played, Elita-1, is a fighting woman with the strength to pull the men along with her, and she is proud of herself and full of confidence. She can also be a bit competitive, so rather than being cute, she is difficult to get along with, and I like her because I feel her humanity and awkwardness.

There are many scenes where her strength is a great relief to everyone. Not only in the fighting scenes, but she is also a character who never loses sight of herself and whose core does not waver throughout the story, so I found her very attractive and she became my favorite character.

-Who is your favorite character?

Yoshioka: I love all of them, but Bumblebee is my favorite character in the series so far. He’s cute, playful, strong, and has many other qualities, so I really recommend him. He’s so cute.

In this episode of Transformers: One, there is a moment when Bee takes out his sword for the first time, and it’s really cute. It’s a fun scene, and I really like it.

-What are your thoughts about your first attempt at dubbing a movie?

Yoshioka: This was my first time dubbing a foreign film, so from the voice acting jobs I’d done up until then, my impression was that in Japanese animation, the images don’t always match unless the key is quite high.

This time, I did the exact opposite and first practiced lowering my voice to match the visuals of Scarlett Johansson and Elita-1. The first thing I did with my voice training teacher was to practice speaking my lines while holding my waist and pulling me from behind to train my tanden and low-pitched voice. I trained my strength to match the pulling force.

After that, I learned about the characteristics or sound of dubbing overseas works, and the image of English dubbing in that there is a space in the mouth, or rather, something that is tight in Japanese is opened up, so I practiced opening up (the inside of the mouth) and also watched a lot of dubbing. I took a lot of inspiration from Japanese voice actors.

-How do you feel about playing a hero role for the first time?

Yoshioka: Elita-1’s fighting style is powerful and straightforward, and her punches are also powerful, so I was very conscious of that. The character was able to pull off moves that would never be possible for a normal human being, so it was exciting to watch and I’m glad I was able to participate.

I felt that I could only have this kind of experience through this work.

–Message to those who are going to watch the movie

Yoshioka: Reading the script and watching the film, I was deeply excited and moved to learn that the story of the series was based on this episode. I think this is the kind of film that makes you feel like you can’t talk about Transformers without seeing it. Please enjoy it at the theater.

Additionally, an additional cast of voice actors has now been announced.

Junichi Suwabe will be playing Sentinel Prime, a heroic figure on the planet Cybertron. Suzuka Yuzuki will be playing Airachnid, who works alongside Sentinel Prime. Other cast members include Toru Inada (Darkwing), Setsuji Sato (Starscream), Masataka Yamamoto (Soundwave), Takanori Hoshino (Shockwave), and Tomokazu Sugita (Jazz), who will be adding a vibrant color to the colorful world of Transformers in this new dimension.
