“Jellyfish Can’t Swim at Night” is a story set in Shibuya about four girls who work as an anonymous artist known as “JELEE.”
The story is about a group of girls who want to “find what they love”, including Kozuki Mahiru (voiced by Ito Miku), a mass-produced high school girl who can draw illustrations, Yamanouchi Kanon (voiced by Takahashi Rie), who caused a stir while active as the idol “Tachibana Nonoka” and graduated, Watase Kiwi (voiced by Tomita Miyu), Mahiru’s childhood friend and VTuber “Ryūgasaki Nox”, and Takanashi Kim Anouk Mei (voiced by Shimabukuro Miyuri), a rich girl who attends a high school attached to a music college and is an ardent Tachibana Nonoka fan. It is a youth drama featuring girls who want to “find what they love”.
This completely original work, directed by Takeshita Ryohei, who also worked on “Eromanga Sensei”, will begin airing on April 6th. The series is written and scripted by Yaku Yuuki, the original author of “Weak Character Tomozaki-kun”, the character designs are by illustrator popman3580, and animation is by Doga Kobo. Let’s take a look back at the end cards of “Yorukura”.
The end card for the memorable first episode was created by Hamunezuko, who was responsible for the original illustrations in the play. In the main story, there is a scene where Kanon, who was active as an anonymous singer under the name JELEE-chan, plays a song for Mahiru. The two of them share earphones just like they did then.
The second episode was drawn by Hirayama Kanna. She portrayed Takanashi, Kim, Anouk, and Mei, who supported Kanon when she was an idol. Hirayama, who is in charge of character design for “Oshi no Ko,” produced by the same Doga Kobo as this work, says this is her first end card job.
The third episode features Hiro Kanzaki, who is known for his original illustrations of “My Little Sister Can’t Be This Cute” and “Eromanga Sensei.” He is a VTuber known as “Ryūgasaki Nox,” and he has created a cute kiwi with a double peace sign.
Episode 4 features the lively Kanon, drawn by Namori, the original author of the movie “Omuroya”. In the main story, the four members of JELEE meet for the first time…
Episode 5 was illustrated by Fly, the original illustrator and character designer for Weak Character Tomozaki-kun. It’s a fantastical illustration of Mahiru and Kurage, but the story also explores the more realistic worries of the social media era.
Popman3580 also expresses his feelings at the wonderful end cards that are released every time.
In episode 6, Akari draws a slightly sexy Kanon. The guest characters Miiko (voiced by Sumire Uesaka) and Ariel (voiced by Nao Toyama) make for a gorgeous story.
Episode 7 was drawn by Tiv, who is known for his manga “Masamune-kun’s Revenge” (originally written by Hazuki Takeoka). He brings out a different charm in Kanon with his unique touch. This was the episode where Kiwi and Kanon meet Koharu (voiced by Asami Seto) at a motorcycle training camp.
Episode 8 is by Niko Fujii, who serializes the comic version of this work on the manga app “Magazine Pocket”. The four members of JELEE are having a pajama party at a training camp!? What is noteworthy is the way Kiwi’s chest is drawn.
In conjunction with the broadcast of episode 8, an “illustration submission campaign” was also held. In conjunction with the anime, fan art of JELEE-chan and jellyfish was flooding the timeline of X (formerly Twitter) in real life!
In addition to Fujii, other people involved in the production also participated, including director Takeshita Ryohei, Yaku Yuki, popman3580, Hamunezuko, Takahashi Rie, who plays Kanon, and Kanoe Rena, who sang the opening theme song “Irodori”, creating a great atmosphere.
Episode 9 was designed by Kerorira, the character designer of “Bocchi the Rock!” Kanon stretches out her hand in a corner of Shibuya… This place actually exists.
Episode 10 was by Shiromanta, a manga artist who serializes “The Story of an Annoying Senpai.” Kiwi and Mei were running around in the main story, but the passionate singing scene at the end was overwhelming.
The 11th episode was by artist faceoka. It was Kanon holding a cutely deformed jellyfish. Perhaps to coincide with the main story where Kiwi’s feelings explode, Yoru’s fan art of Ryugasaki Nox was also released. Don’t miss it!
The final episode’s end card was done by popman3580. All four members of JELEE are gathered together!
The TV anime “Jellyfish Can’t Swim at Night” is currently available on various distribution platforms. Blu-ray Vol. 1 was released on June 26th (vol. 4 will be released monthly thereafter). In addition, the novelized version by Yaku (Gagaga Bunko) has been published three times in a row since May.
This concludes the end card introduction for “Jellyfish Can’t Swim at Night.” Goodbye, world!
