Deep dive into the song “To the Sea” from the movie “Given: To the Sea”! Centimillimental’s Atsushi looks back on the behind-the-scenes story of the song’s productionThe anime series “Given” was broadcast on TV in 2019 as the first BL comic to be animated in “Noitamina”, and the first movie was released in 2020. The second part of the two-part movie “Given: To the Sea”, which concludes the series, has been receiving rave reviews since Friday, September 20th.

Many of the songs in the Given anime series so far have been handled by Atsushi’s solo unit Centimillimental, who debuted with the opening theme song Kizuato for the TV anime Given.

This time, Atsushi of Centimillimental talked about the behind-the-scenes story of the song “Umi e” from the movie “Given: To the Sea” and the thoughts he put into the song. Eight new scene cuts have also arrived.

The movie “Given: To the Sea” depicts Mafuyu, who is troubled by various feelings, such as his feelings for Rika and his feelings about music, but moves forward with the support of those around him.

This film has been receiving a lot of attention since it was released, and one of the songs performed in the film is “To the Sea,” a new song by Hiiragi and Genjun’s band, “syh.”

“To the Sea” is an unfinished song left behind by Yuki Yoshida, a childhood friend of Mafuyu, Hiragi, and Gensumi, and Mafuyu’s former lover. It was completed by Ritsuka, who joins “syh” as a temporary support guitarist.

Centimillimental’s Atsushi said about this song, “This song was written by a character named Yuki, not Mafuyu, Hiiragi, or Ritsuka, and it’s also the song that concludes the series, so I felt the most pressure. Mafuyu’s humming, which is also a familiar melody from ‘Winter Story,’ was what inspired Yuki to write this song, and the title of the film was already confirmed to be ‘To the Sea,’ so it was difficult to create a song that was different from anything we’ve done before, taking that into consideration .”

Looking back on the production of the song, he said, “I think of Yuki as a person who is somewhat philosophical. When I decided to give him a song with a humming melody, likening it to going to the sea with Mafuyu, I didn’t think he would simply write a song that traced his memories of that time. I imagined him taking into account the events of that day, coming up with an answer based on his own realizations, and then incorporating that into the song ‘To the Sea,’ and I constructed the structure of the lyrics with that in mind. ” He went on to create the song with a deeper understanding and image in mind.

He then talked about the feelings he put into the song ” Umi e,” saying, “The four members of Given, the two members of syh, Ugetsu, and Yuki. I hoped that I could encompass all the charming characters that have colored the series so far in one piece of music . I created this song with that wish in mind.”

Among the new stills are those capturing Mafuyu and Hiiragi’s live performance scenes, as well as Mafuyu approaching Ritsuka with a serious look in her eyes, and Mafuyu looking down as she pulls on Ugetsu’s clothes. Please pay attention not only to the live performance scenes, but also to the human drama woven by each character.

Now showing to rave reviews!

After meeting Sato Mafuyu, Uenoyama Ritsuka’s passion for music was rekindled.

With Mafuyu’s singing and Ritsuka’s guitar, the band “Given” is starting to move, but when Mafuyu’s past and feelings for Ritsuka start to intersect once again, the distance between the two begins to grow again.

The original work is “Given,” which was serialized in “Cheri+” (published by Shinshokan) by Kizu Natsuki starting in 2013.

The first BL comic to be adapted into an anime was broadcast on Fuji TV’s “Noitamina” in 2019, followed by the first film in the series, “Given the Movie,” in 2020.

This hugely popular youth band story was made into a live-action drama and a stage play the following year in 2021.

The long-awaited anime sequel, the first part of a two-part film series, “Given the Movie: Hiiragi Mix,” will be released in January 2024, and the second part, “Given the Movie: To the Sea,” will be released on September 20, 2024.
